At Fairways Care Home, we love the everyday moments that spark conversation, curiosity, and connection. And recently, we found a simple (and delicious!) way to do exactly that: a tasting experience that invited everyone to explore flavour, share opinions, and maybe even surprise themselves.

Because here’s the thing about taste… it isn’t fixed. It changes over time. Our taste buds evolve as we get older, and what we loved years ago might not hit the same now. Sometimes we become more sensitive to certain flavours. Sometimes we crave different textures. Sometimes we suddenly discover we’re a “savoury person” after a lifetime of sweet — or vice versa.

So why not make a bit of a celebration out of it?

The question that started it all: sweet or savoury?

Our first tasting session brought a playful debate to the table:

Are you team sweet 🍬 or team savoury?

To find out, we hosted a popcorn tasting session, a fun, accessible activity that everyone could join in with. Popcorn is familiar, easy to eat, and instantly brings back memories for many people: cinema trips, family nights in, or sharing snacks with friends. But this wasn’t just any bowl of popcorn. We explored different flavours and combinations, sampling and comparing as we went.

The best part? Listening to the reactions.

Some people knew immediately what they liked. Others surprised themselves by enjoying something they didn’t expect. And some confirmed — very confidently — what they definitely don’t like (which is just as useful!).

A tasting session is about more than food

It might sound simple, but a tasting activity like this offers so much more than a snack.

It’s an opportunity to:

  • Try something new in a relaxed way
  • Take part without pressure (you can sample a little or a lot)
  • Share opinions and memories (“This reminds me of…” is often how great conversations begin)
  • Discover preferences that help us tailor menus and treats
  • Enjoy the social side of eating and drinking, which is just as important as the taste itself

Food is one of the most powerful connectors we have. Even when people have different preferences, the act of tasting together creates a shared experience — one where laughter, curiosity, and conversation naturally flow.

Popcorn: small bites, big opinions

With the popcorn tasting, the room quickly filled with friendly debate. And that’s the magic of it. When you’re invited to explore in small, bite-sized ways, it feels safe to be adventurous. You don’t have to commit to a full portion. You can try a taste, decide, and move on, or go back for more.

It’s a brilliant reminder that “trying something new” doesn’t need to be a big, daunting leap. It can be one small mouthful that opens up a whole new favourite.

As if popcorn tasting wasn’t enough, we followed it up with something equally enjoyable, and wonderfully calming: a tea tasting event with Dan. It was a real treat. Together, we explored a variety of teas, learning a little more about:

  • Different flavour profiles
  • Brewing techniques (how small changes can make a big difference!)
  • Aromas, strengths, and blends
  • And of course… the tasting itself

Whether someone already loved tea or was simply curious, the session was accessible, friendly, and full of discovery, perfect for tea enthusiasts and beginners alike.

There’s something comforting about tea. It invites you to slow down, pay attention, and enjoy the moment. And when you add in the social element tasting together, comparing notes, chatting about what you like, it becomes an experience rather than just a drink.

At Fairways, we’re always looking for ways to offer meaningful experiences that everyone can take part in. That’s what made these tasting sessions so special they were adventurous without being overwhelming.

Not everyone wants or is able to try completely unfamiliar foods all at once. But a tasting session is different. It offers:

  • Choice (try what you want, skip what you don’t)
  • Control (small samples, at your own pace)
  • Confidence (encouragement from others helps people feel more open)
  • Comfort (a familiar setting with familiar people)

Taste changes as we age and that’s completely normal. One of the most interesting conversations that came out of these sessions was about how preferences shift over time.

As we get older, it’s common for taste and smell to change. People can become less sensitive to some flavours and more sensitive to others. Texture can matter more. Temperature can matter more. Some foods that once felt too strong can become enjoyable, while other once-loved favourites might lose their appeal.

This is exactly why encouraging curiosity around food and drink can be such a positive thing. When we stay open to trying new tastes, we expand our options and we increase the chances of finding new pleasures.

Being adventurous doesn’t have to mean extreme flavours or unfamiliar dishes. It can be as simple as tasting a different tea, trying a new popcorn flavour, or discovering that your preference has changed from sweet to savoury (or the other way around!).

There’s a wider point here too: trying new things keeps life interesting.

At Fairways, we see how experiences like these can brighten the week. They create:

  • Something to look forward to
  • A topic of conversation that carries on after the session
  • A sense of participation and inclusion
  • New ideas for future activities (and future treats!)

And because food and drink are so closely linked to memory and emotion, tasting sessions often bring unexpected benefits, like stories from the past, shared laughter, and moments of connection between residents, team members, and visitors.

Of course, there was also a practical benefit. These tastings helped us learn more about what people truly enjoy, so we can serve more of what everyone loves. It’s a simple but meaningful way to keep wellbeing at the heart of daily life: listening, responding, and shaping experiences around the people who live here.

Whether you’re firmly team sweet or proudly team savoury, your preferences matter. And sometimes the best way to find them is simply to taste, chat, and enjoy.

After the success of popcorn and tea, we’re already looking forward to what we might explore next. The beauty of tasting experiences is that they can be adapted in so many ways, always keeping them fun, accessible, and led by curiosity. For now, we’ll simply say this:

At Fairways Care Home we believe joy can be found in the smallest things, a new flavour, a favourite blend, a shared laugh over a surprising taste, and the simple pleasure of trying something new together.
