Everyday Joy and Individual Wellbeing at Fairways Care Home

Wellbeing is not always found in grand occasions or elaborate plans. Very often, it grows from the familiar pleasures that make people smile: sharing a favourite treat, joining in with a light-hearted celebration, laughing with friends or simply feeling included in the moment.

At Fairways Care Home in New Romney, meaningful activities are shaped around the people who live here. That means looking beyond a fixed timetable and thinking carefully about individual personalities, interests, memories and preferences. It also means embracing the seasons, responding to current themes and finding imaginative ways to turn everyday moments into positive experiences.

Two recent activities captured this approach perfectly: a summer ice cream party and a fun celebration for World Emoji Day. They were very different occasions, but both brought residents together through choice, conversation, humour and shared enjoyment.

A Taste of Summer at Fairways

Few things capture the feeling of summer quite like an ice cream. It can bring back memories of seaside holidays, trips to the park, visits from the ice cream van or warm afternoons spent with family and friends.

Our ice cream party gave residents the opportunity to enjoy that familiar seasonal pleasure together. Everyone could choose their favourite flavours and toppings, creating an individual treat that was just right for them.

The enjoyment was not only in the ice cream itself. Choosing between flavours encouraged conversation, while comparing toppings led to plenty of smiles and friendly debate.

Residents could talk about combinations they had always loved, flavours they remembered from childhood and the treats they used to enjoy with their own families.

These relaxed conversations are an important part of wellbeing. They help people connect, share memories and learn more about one another. A simple activity can naturally open the door to reminiscence without making it feel formal or pressured.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, good company and, of course, some wonderfully sweet creations. It was a reminder that familiar food can offer far more than refreshment. It can create comfort, stir memories and help make an ordinary summer day feel special.

Expressing Ourselves on World Emoji Day

Fairways also embraced a thoroughly modern theme by celebrating World Emoji Day.

Emojis have become part of everyday communication. A single smiling face, heart or laughing expression can often say more than a sentence. For our activity, residents chose their favourite emojis and had great fun recreating the expressions themselves.

There were big smiles, surprised faces, cheeky looks and plenty of laughter as everyone accepted the challenge. The activity was simple and accessible, but it encouraged self-expression, imagination and social interaction.

It also showed that current themes can be enjoyed by people of every generation. Activities do not always have to focus on the past. Reminiscence can be valuable, but residents should also have opportunities to engage with the world as it is today, discover something new and be part of the conversations happening beyond the home.

The familiar symbols gave everyone an easy starting point. Residents could choose an expression that appealed to them, interpret it in their own way and enjoy seeing how others responded. It created some very memorable photographs, but the most valuable part was the shared laughter and connection behind them.

Activities Built Around the Individual

No two residents are exactly alike. People arrive at Fairways with their own life experiences, routines, abilities, interests and ideas about how they like to spend their time.

This is why personalised wellbeing matters. A successful activity is not simply one that fills a space in the diary. It is one that gives residents genuine opportunities to choose, participate and enjoy themselves in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful.

For one person, the highlight of an ice cream party may be choosing a favourite flavour. For another, it might be talking about childhood holidays or watching friends create unusual combinations. During the emoji activity, one resident may enjoy performing for the camera, while someone else may prefer laughing along from the group.

Participation can take many forms. There should be no pressure to join in in one particular way. Being present, observing, chatting, tasting, choosing or simply sharing the atmosphere can all be valuable.

By recognising these differences, our team can support residents to remain themselves. The aim is not to create identical experiences, but to make space for individuality within shared occasions.

The Importance of Simple Pleasures

In care home life, wellbeing is often strengthened through small moments that happen consistently. A favourite song, a chat over a drink, time in the garden, a familiar scent or an unexpected treat can all lift a person’s day.

Simple activities can be especially powerful because they feel natural. They do not require people to learn complicated rules or achieve a particular outcome. Instead, they create an invitation: to enjoy, remember, laugh, talk or try something different.

They can also provide sensory enjoyment through taste, colour, sound, movement and touch. Ice cream offers familiar flavours and textures, while an expressive activity such as recreating emojis encourages facial movement, observation and humour.

Most importantly, these moments create a sense of belonging. Sharing an enjoyable experience with other people encourages friendships and adds warmth, interest and rhythm to the day.

Embracing the Seasons and the World Around Us

Responding to seasons, celebrations and topical events helps keep life at Fairways varied and connected to the wider world.

A summer activity might involve enjoying ice cream, relaxing outdoors or celebrating the colours and flavours associated with warmer days. A themed awareness day can provide a completely different starting point for conversation, creativity and fun.

Not every theme will appeal to every resident, which is why choice remains central. The purpose is not to follow occasions simply because they appear on a calendar. It is to identify the themes that could interest residents and then adapt them into enjoyable, meaningful experiences.

World Emoji Day provided something playful and contemporary, while the ice cream party offered a familiar seasonal pleasure. Together, they demonstrate the variety that can be achieved without losing sight of what matters most: the people taking part.

Making Every Day Meaningful

Our wellbeing programme at Fairways Care Home includes a mixture of seasonal occasions, current themes, familiar interests and spontaneous pleasures. Some activities are energetic and creative; others are calm, reflective or centred on conversation. What connects them is a focus on the resident as an individual.

We listen to what people enjoy, notice what prompts a smile and adapt activities so that everyone has the opportunity to take part in a way that suits them. Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest: a favourite flavour, a funny face and a room full of people enjoying one another’s company.

The ice cream party and World Emoji Day celebration may have been light-hearted, but the benefits behind them were meaningful. They encouraged choice, sparked memories, supported expression and created moments of genuine connection.

At Fairways, these happy occasions are not extras. They are part of creating a home where people can continue to enjoy life, express their personalities and find pleasure in every season.

Because sometimes the simplest treats really do create the happiest moments.
