The things we choose to do in our own time say a great deal about who we are. A favourite hobby can provide enjoyment, purpose and familiarity. It may be creative, sociable, peaceful or practical, but most importantly, it belongs to the individual.

At Fairways Care Home, we believe moving into a care home should never mean losing sight of the interests that have brought meaning and pleasure throughout life. This was beautifully reflected when Mollie shared one of her favourite hobbies: making cards. With her carer June beside her, the two spent time choosing materials, creating beautiful designs and enjoying calm conversation. It was a quiet and thoughtful activity, but one filled with creativity, companionship and special moments.

More than something to pass the time

Mollie’s love of making cards

For Mollie, card-making offers a wonderful opportunity to be creative. Every card begins with choices: colours, patterns, pictures, messages and small decorative details. Those decisions make each finished design personal and unique.

Making a card by hand is particularly meaningful. It is a creative project and a way of thinking about someone else. The finished card carries the time, care and personality invested in it.

As Mollie worked, June was there to offer the support she needed without taking over the activity. That balance matters. The aim is not simply to complete a card, but to ensure that the experience remains Mollie’s: her ideas, her decisions and her achievement.

Together, they shared creative memories, gentle conversation and the satisfaction of seeing Mollie’s design take shape. Meaningful care can often be found in these quiet parts of the day.
