From art table to catwalk Fairways Care Home turns creativity into fashion magic

There are days at Fairways Care Home in New Romney that sparkle with imagination days when something ordinary suddenly becomes extraordinary. Our recent art session did exactly that. What started as a simple craft activity quickly blossomed into a full-blown fashion experience, complete with glamour, laughter, memories, and a playful nod to Hollywood’s golden era.

It began with a single image. But with a little creativity and a lot of enthusiasm it soon evolved into a fabulous, fashion-themed showcase that had residents chatting, reminiscing, designing, and celebrating personal style in the most joyful way.

At Fairways Care Home, we believe creativity is ageless. The ability to imagine, design, experiment, and express ourselves never leaves us it simply changes with us. These kinds of activities aren’t just enjoyable; they’re deeply beneficial for wellbeing, confidence, and connection.

Art gives people the freedom to express who they are, how they feel, and what sparks their imagination. For our residents, this session opened the door to expressing their individuality through colours, fabrics, embellishments, and playful design choices.

Choosing patterns, recalling styles, comparing designs, and experimenting with materials all stimulate the mind gently, naturally, and enjoyably. Residents chatted about their favourite stars, the clothing they once wore, dances they attended, dresses they adored, and hairstyles they proudly rocked in their youth.

Creativity, in this way, becomes a social activity as much as a personal one.

There is something undeniably uplifting about creating something beautiful and seeing others admire it. Whether a design was simple or bold, everyone had a moment where they felt proud of what they’d made.

Our fashion-themed craft session drew inspiration from the glamorous fashion magazines of the 1950s a decade many of our residents remember with great fondness. The graceful lines of Audrey Hepburn, the elegance of Grace Kelly, the dramatic gowns worn by Elizabeth Taylor,  these icons filled our tables and imaginations.

As residents browsed through pages of vintage Hollywood glamour, it sparked nostalgia for dressing up in their own youth:

  • The dresses they saved up for

  • The skirts that swished when they danced

  • The lipstick shades that made them feel fabulous

  • The hairstyles that took half a can of hairspray to hold

Suddenly, the room became not just a craft space, but a shared window into the past one filled with laughter, stories, and memories of a time when getting ready to go out was part of the fun.

One resident described the session perfectly:
“It felt like stepping back into my own dressing-up days. I remember the feeling of putting on something new and feeling wonderful. Today brought that back.”

With scissors, glue, paper, beads, ribbons, and a spark of inspiration, our residents began transforming simple images into personalised fashion masterpieces.

Some designs were elegant and understated. Others bold and colourful. Some turned into extravagant gowns worthy of a Hollywood premiere. And some became playful artistic statements that showed off real creative flair. By the end of the session, our tables were covered in fabulous designs each one unique, each one telling a story

Residents proudly displayed their creations, sharing what inspired them, who they imagined wearing their design, and the memories the process brought back. The room was filled with applause, admiration, and the occasional cheeky comment about past fashion choices.

What made this activity so special wasn’t just the creativity or the final designs, but the togetherness it created. There were plenty of giggles  especially when talk turned to 1950s hairstyles, corsets, and how long it took to get ready for a night out “back in the day.”

Residents remembered dances, weddings, first dates, family gatherings, and outfits that made them feel like a movie star.

Seeing someone else’s design often sparked new ideas or memories, creating a natural flow of conversation that felt warm, vibrant, and deeply connecting. Every finished piece was celebrated not because it was perfect, but because it was personal.

Exploring fashion, art, and design is far more than a simple pastime. Activities like these support:

  • Memory recall

  • Fine motor skills

  • Conversation and social connection

  • Self-expression and identity

  • Confidence and emotional wellbeing

Fashion, in particular, taps into something very relatable. Clothing is woven into our memories what we wore, how it made us feel, how we expressed ourselves, and the moments those outfits accompanied us through.

This session allowed residents to revisit that part of themselves in a joyful, imaginative way.

The success of this activity has inspired us to explore even more ways to spark creativity, imagination, and joy here at Fairways Care Home. Whether it’s themed craft sessions, storytelling through art, or more fashion-inspired fun, we’re excited to keep creating experiences that bring our residents together through shared interests and happy memories.

And who knows perhaps the next fashion show will be even bigger! At Fairways Care Home, we believe that creativity should never fade with age. If anything, it becomes more precious. This fashion-craft session reminded us that imagination is still very much alive colourful, expressive, and beautifully inspiring.

Stay tuned for more creative adventures, more smiles, and many more opportunities to turn simple ideas into unforgettable moments.
