Fairways celebrates Carer Hero Day: heartfelt thanks for everyday kindness
At Fairways Care Home in New Romney, kindness is part of everyday life. It is there in a reassuring conversation, a helping hand and the time taken to listen. For Carer Hero Day, residents shared heartfelt messages of gratitude with the carers whose compassion helps and guides them each day.
Written on colourful thank-you letters, their words offered a touching insight into the relationships at the heart of Fairways. Some messages were short and simple; others reflected on the difference that support has made. Together, they celebrated the people who bring warmth, patience and understanding to life at Fairways.
A thank-you from the heart
There is something especially meaningful about appreciation expressed in someone’s own words. Our Carer Hero Day letters gave residents an opportunity to recognise the team and share what their care means to them.
Ann described staff as “wonderful”, “caring” and “very kind”, ending her message with a thank-you and kisses. Eric wrote: “Thank you for everything you do.” Roy thanked the carers who had helped him during his time at Fairways, while Shirley expressed how happy she was with the way staff looked after her.
These messages speak of more than assistance with daily routines. They reflect trust, familiarity and the comfort of knowing there is someone nearby who cares. For our team, they are a reminder that everyday kindness is noticed, valued and remembered.
What makes a care hero?
Care heroes show up with compassion, including during moments that might pass unnoticed by others. They offer encouragement when something feels difficult, reassurance when someone is uncertain and companionship when a friendly face makes all the difference.
Their work calls for practical skills, attentiveness and sensitivity. Supporting someone well means understanding when to offer help, when to give them time and how to respect their choices. It also means recognising that each person has their own history, habits and hopes.
At Fairways, Carer Hero Day was an opportunity to pause and appreciate this contribution. The letters captured something essential about care: how support is given matters deeply to the person receiving it.
Personalised care in New Romney
Fairways is an ACI Care home offering residential, dementia and respite care in a welcoming setting. Our approach brings together support with everyday needs and the companionship that helps a place feel like home.
Personalised care starts with getting to know the individual. What makes them comfortable? Which routines matter? What do they enjoy, and how would they like to spend their day? These questions help shape care around the person, with residents and families contributing to an understanding of their needs and preferences.
Moving into a care home can be a significant change. Being welcomed by people who take an interest, listen carefully and offer reassurance helps create the foundations for new relationships and a sense of belonging.
Residential care that respects independence
Our residential care offers a helping hand for people who need support with daily living. This can include assistance with washing, dressing and other personal care needs, alongside the reassurance of having a team available around the clock.
Just as important is supporting residents to continue doing what they can and making decisions about their own lives. A person’s preferences should help guide their day, from familiar routines to the activities they choose to enjoy. ACI Care
The gratitude expressed in our Carer Hero Day letters reflects the importance of this relationship. Receiving assistance is a personal experience. When it is offered with kindness and respect, it can help someone feel comfortable asking for support while retaining their dignity.
Dementia care with patience and understanding
For someone living with dementia, compassionate relationships are particularly important. Changes in memory or the way surroundings are understood can make everyday experiences more challenging. Having patient support can offer reassurance in those moments.
Fairways provides dementia care shaped around individual needs. Getting to know someone’s preferences, familiar routines and life story helps the team understand what matters to them and approach their care thoughtfully. ACI Care
A calm conversation, an explanation offered gently or time spent listening can be meaningful parts of that support. Our aim is to help residents feel valued as individuals, with dignity and comfort at the centre of their care. Families also bring valuable knowledge about their loved one’s experiences and preferences.
Respite care with a warm welcome
Sometimes, care is needed for a shorter period. Respite care at Fairways provides temporary support in a friendly environment, whether someone needs additional assistance following illness or a family carer needs time to rest. ACI Care
A short stay still deserves personal attention. Understanding a guest’s routines, needs and interests helps the team offer appropriate support and a welcoming introduction to life in the home.
For families, discussing respite care can be a useful first step towards arranging a break. Our team can talk through the support required and whether Fairways can meet those needs. Kindness and companionship matter just as much during a temporary stay as they do for someone making Fairways their home.
Companionship by the coast
Our location near Greatstone beach provides a coastal backdrop to the Fairways community. Inside the home, daily life brings opportunities for company, conversation and enjoyable activities, alongside space for quieter moments.
Care and companionship belong together. Taking an interest in someone’s day, sharing a laugh or listening to a memory helps build relationships that make everyday life feel personal.
For residents, being part of a community can mean having someone to chat with over a cup of tea or enjoying a shared interest. These ordinary moments create opportunities to connect, helping relationships grow naturally alongside the practical support our team provides.
Carer Hero Day celebrated those connections. To every Fairways carer whose kindness helps residents feel supported: thank you for being true care heroes.
