At Fairways Care Home in New Romney, learning never stops and this month, residents and team members came together to take on a brand-new challenge: exploring the world of sign language.
In celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, residents rolled up their sleeves and set out to learn as much as they could about this beautiful and expressive form of communication. Together, they practised signing the alphabet and even learned how to spell the word LOVE, a fitting and poignant choice for such a special day.
And love truly was the theme of the afternoon. Residents shared how much they enjoyed discovering the beginnings of a new language and the joy of learning something fresh together. “It reminded us that it’s never too late to learn,” one participant said with a smile.
The experience sparked fascinating conversations about how those with hearing loss communicate, the importance of inclusion, and the value of understanding one another beyond words.
“The activity was more than just about learning signs,” said the Fairways team. “It was about empathy, connection, and celebrating different ways of expressing ourselves. Everyone encouraged one another, and the sense of achievement at the end was wonderful.”
Moments like this highlight what makes life at Fairways Care Home so special; a community spirit built on curiosity, kindness, and shared experiences. Coming together to learn something new wasn’t just stimulating and fun; it was deeply meaningful, reinforcing Fairways belief that learning is for everyone at any age.
The story even caught the attention of the local press, with the our enthusiasm and positivity featured on Kent News, a proud moment for the whole Fairways Care Home community.
