Christmas at Mountside Care Home in Hastings was nothing short of magical. It was a season filled with warmth, laughter, music and connection; a true celebration of what it means to live as part of a caring, vibrant community.

From the familiar faces within our home to the wider local community who welcomed us so warmly, this festive period reminded us just how fortunate we are. Every visit, every performance and every shared moment added another layer of meaning to the season, creating memories that will be cherished long after the decorations are packed away.

At Mountside Care Home community sits at the heart of everything we do. Christmas is a time when that sense of belonging becomes even more visible, not just within our home, but through the incredible support and kindness shown by the wider Hastings community.

Everyone that lives at Mountside, the care teams, families, volunteers, local groups and schools all played a part in making this festive season so special. This sense of togetherness brings comfort, purpose and joy. It’s why community connections are so deeply valued and why we are forever grateful for the people who continue to share their time, talents and kindness with us.

One of the highlights of the season was taking part in the Blacklands Fellowship Church Christmas celebration. This special event brought everyone together with the local community in a warm, welcoming environment filled with festive spirit.

There was conversation, laughter and a shared sense of celebration that reminded everyone how important inclusion and connection are at this time of year. Being able to step outside the home and celebrate alongside others helped reinforce a sense of belonging and participation; something that is vital for wellbeing at every stage of life.

Music has an incredible way of bringing people together, and Ritchie Lee’s live Christmas performance did exactly that. His renditions of classic Christmas songs filled the room with nostalgia and joy, instantly lifting spirits and inviting everyone to join in.

Moments like these show the power of live music in care settings. It connects people emotionally, supports wellbeing and creates shared experiences that stay with us long after the final note is sung. Another unforgettable highlight was our visit to the Ark Alexandra Academy Christmas party. The warmth and generosity shown by the students and staff made the day truly special.

There was delicious food, wonderful entertainment and even a surprise visit from Father Christmas himself was a moment that brought smiles to every face. The children’s enthusiasm, kindness and thoughtfulness created a joyful atmosphere that was impossible not to be swept up in.

Intergenerational experiences like this are incredibly enriching. They offer residents the chance to engage with younger generations, share stories, and feel part of something bigger; while children gain insight, empathy and meaningful connections in return.

Back at Mountside, creativity played a big role in our celebrations. Residents took great pride in crafting beautiful festive table centrepieces for our Christmas Day dinner. Each creation reflected individuality, teamwork and a shared excitement for the big day ahead.

These hands-on activities are about far more than decoration. They promote creativity, dexterity and conversation, while giving residents a tangible way to contribute to the celebrations. Seeing their handcrafted centrepieces displayed proudly on Christmas Day added an extra sense of accomplishment and joy.

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a little friendly competition, and our mince pie tasting challenge certainly delivered. Residents sampled a selection of mince pies, carefully judging flavour, texture and festive appeal. After much discussion and debate, Tesco’s mince pies came out on top, earning the coveted title of best filling.

We were also delighted to welcome members of The 13th Hastings Rainbows, Brownies and Guides into our home. Their visit brought festive cheer in abundance, with a lovely performance and beautifully handmade gifts for our residents. The care and effort put into these gifts touched everyone deeply. Seeing young people take the time to spread kindness and joy created a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the importance of nurturing connections across generations.

These moments of shared celebration enrich life at Mountside and reinforce the idea that our home is open, welcoming and firmly rooted in the local community.

No festive season at Mountside would be complete without our annual Christmas bake-off, and this year’s competition did not disappoint. Baking skills were showcased with an impressive array of beautifully crafted yule logs. Judging was no easy task with each entry made with care, creativity and pride, making it incredibly difficult to choose a winner. The bake-off was filled with laughter, encouragement and a real sense of camaraderie, reminding everyone that taking part is just as important as winning.

What made this festive season so special was the variety of experiences on offer. These enriching experiences support emotional wellbeing, encourage social connection and ensure that everyone feels engaged, valued and included. Christmas at Mountside Care Home was not just celebrated; it was lived. Thank you everyone who made it so special.
