Mother’s Day at Mountside Care Home was marked in a gentle, heartfelt and creative way this year, as residents came together to craft beautiful flowers in honour of their mothers and the memories they still hold so dearly.

The activity became much more than an arts and crafts session. It created a special moment for reflection, conversation and connection, giving residents the opportunity to remember the women who shaped their lives, the homes they grew up in, and the love that still lives on through treasured memories.

As colourful handmade flowers began to take shape, so did a lovely stream of conversation. Residents shared the words and memories they most closely associate with their mums. Some remembered music playing in the home. Others smiled as they recalled being told off when they had been mischievous as children. There were fond reflections on mothers who were wonderful cooks, talented knitters and skilled with a sewing needle. One resident spoke warmly of a mother who created a happy home, while another proudly shared that her mum’s name was May.

It was these simple but deeply personal details that made the day so meaningful.

Mother’s Day can bring many emotions. For some, it is a joyful celebration of family. For others, it is a time of remembrance. At Mountside, the day was approached with warmth and sensitivity, allowing residents to celebrate love in all its forms — through memory, conversation, creativity and time spent together.

The flower-making activity was a fitting way to do that. Flowers are so often linked with Mother’s Day, but in this setting they became symbols of remembrance as well as celebration. Every petal, colour and design offered residents a chance to reflect on someone important in their life. The process of making something with their hands also encouraged calm, focus and a sense of purpose, while the shared nature of the activity helped bring everyone together.

As residents worked on their creations, the room was filled with stories from childhood and family life. There was laughter at old memories, tenderness in the recollection of much-loved routines, and that unmistakable comfort that comes from being able to say, “mother used to do that too.” These conversations matter. They help residents connect not only with their own personal histories, but with one another too.

That is one of the most powerful things about meaningful activities in a care home setting. They create the right atmosphere for conversation to flow naturally. They help unlock memories that may otherwise remain quiet. They encourage connection across generations and give value to the life stories each person carries.

The day became even more special with visits from residents’ own families, adding another layer of warmth to the occasion. Spending time together, laughing over childhood memories and simply enjoying each other’s company helped make Mother’s Day feel personal and full of love. For families, these moments are precious. They are opportunities to connect, reminisce and create new memories while honouring old ones.

At Mountside Care Home, occasions like Mother’s Day are not only about marking a date on the calendar. They are about recognising what matters most to people; love, family, memory, identity and belonging. They are about creating space for residents to talk about the people and moments that have shaped them, and ensuring those stories continue to be heard and valued.

There is real importance in making time for memories. Memory-based activities can support emotional wellbeing, encourage communication and strengthen relationships. Even the smallest shared recollection can open the door to comfort, laughter and recognition. Whether remembering a mother’s cooking, her knitting, her singing, her sewing, or simply the feeling of growing up in a happy home, every memory shared helps keep those connections alive.

Conversation is equally important. In care settings, opportunities for meaningful discussion can make a real difference to wellbeing. They help residents feel listened to, understood and connected. Activities like this give people a natural reason to speak, reflect and engage.

Mother’s Day at Mountside was a beautiful reminder that celebration does not need to be extravagant to be deeply moving. Sometimes, the most powerful moments come from sitting together, making something by hand, talking about the past and sharing time with people who matter.

Through craft, Mountside Care Home created a space for love and remembrance to sit side by side. It was a day for family, for memories, for conversation and for celebrating the lasting influence of mothers in all the many ways they are remembered.

The handmade flowers were lovely, but it was the stories behind them that made the day truly unforgettable.
