At Mountside Care Home, we believe the most enriching days are built from the moments that feel real, familiar, and shared. A warm kitchen filled with the smell of chocolate. A table of friends leaning in over a word game. A room buzzing with laughter as our very own “Winter Olympics” opening ceremony kicks off with friendly competition and plenty of cheer.
This season, our activities have been a perfect reminder that wellbeing is not just something you talk about it’s something you create, day by day, through connection, purpose, and joy.
Here’s a look at some of the feel-good highlights.
There are few things more comforting than baking together. This month, chocolate crispy buns were on the menu and the experience was just as sweet as the result. Residents got stuck in from the very start: mixing, stirring, measuring, shaping, and (of course) doing a little taste-testing along the way. And for many, it’s the sensory experience that makes it special.
The familiar smells, the comforting routine, and the anticipation of enjoying something homemade afterwards.
It’s also an activity with real therapeutic value. Baking supports. Fine motor skills through stirring, mixing, and handling ingredients. Cognitive stimulation through sequencing steps and following a process. Sensory engagement with textures, aromas, and taste. Social connection through teamwork, conversation, and shared achievement.
And then comes the best part: sitting down together with a cuppa to enjoy the crispy buns we created. A delicious activity, a real feel-good moment, and a wonderful reminder that the small things, done together, often become the best parts of the day.
There’s nothing like a good word game to bring people together, and Scrabble continues to be a firm favourite. Our recent game was full of laughter, friendly competition, and a few vocabulary surprises that had everyone smiling (and maybe a little impressed). Word games are brilliant for keeping minds active while still feeling relaxed and enjoyable. They encourage residents to think, recall, plan, and problem-solve without it ever feeling like “work.” Scrabble also naturally builds connection: residents cheer each other on, share ideas, challenge one another (in the best way), and celebrate each clever word that lands on the board.
For those who prefer to watch, there’s still plenty to enjoy, calling out suggestions, spotting bonus opportunities, or simply soaking up the social energy around the table. Every role is valuable, and every person can feel included in the experience.
Scrabble supports wellbeing in so many ways. It isn’t about winning, though a well-earned victory is always enjoyed. It’s about staying connected, keeping our minds lively, and sharing those everyday moments that make life feel brighter.
If there’s one thing Mountside does brilliantly, it’s turning an idea into an experience and our Mountside Winter Olympics proved exactly that. We began in true Olympic spirit with an opening ceremony, complete with a stunning Olympic torch and our shared promise to do our best. That sense of ceremony matters. It brings anticipation, excitement, and a feeling of occasion. Something to look forward to, talk about, and be proud to be part of.
Then came the games themselves, playful, inclusive and full of laughter. One of our best-loved activities was the “snowball grabbing” not an official Olympic sport, but certainly a Mountside favourite. With safe, adapted props and plenty of encouragement, residents enjoyed taking part in a way that suited them, whether that meant joining in actively, or cheering from the sidelines.
From snowball tossing to tobogganing-themed fun, the Winter Olympics created the perfect balance of movement, teamwork, and joyful competition. For some residents, it was about testing their coordination and mobility in a gentle, supportive way. For others, it was about the atmosphere being part of a shared event, enjoying the humour, and creating memories together.
At Mountside Care Home, enrichment isn’t a one-off. It’s woven into daily life through activities that are meaningful, accessible, and designed around what residents genuinely enjoy. Whether we’re baking something sweet, sharing stories over a Scrabble board, or creating our own Winter Olympics, the focus stays the same: helping residents feel connected, confident, and part of something.
Because the best days aren’t always the busiest ones. Often, they’re the ones filled with the simple joys, warm smells from the kitchen, laughter around a table, and the feeling that today had something in it just for you.
