“Blue Monday” has a reputation. It arrives in the heart of winter, when the mornings feel darker, the evenings arrive earlier than we’d like, and the calendar still looks a little too far away from spring. It’s often talked about as the most difficult day of the year a moment when motivation dips and the world feels a touch heavier.
At Mountside Care Home, we decided to do something different. Instead of leaning into the label, we chose to turn Blue Monday into a day of colour, connection, and laughter. Not by denying that winter can feel long, or that low moods are real, but by reminding ourselves of something equally real: joy can be created, shared, and multiplied, especially when we do it together.
There’s something powerful about the small decisions we make as a community. The choice to put music on. The choice to invite someone to join in. The choice to say, “Let’s make this day lighter.”
Blue Monday gave us a perfect excuse not to dwell on negativity, but to practice a different mindset: one rooted in togetherness, humour, and the appreciation of small things.
Because low days happen. But so do kind days. And sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is intentionally create moments that bring warmth into the room, even when the weather outside feels cold.
So, what did we do? We planned an afternoon designed to make people smile. Not a grand event, not something that needed a huge build-up, simply a shared experience that felt fun, inclusive, and delightfully silly.
There was music. There was dancing. There were games. And most importantly, there was that wonderful Mountside feeling: the sense that we’re in it together, that everyone belongs, and that joy is something we can all contribute to whether we’re leading an activity, cheering from the side, or laughing at ourselves when things get messy.
Some days, community is a quiet cup of tea and a chat. And some days, community is trying to eat a doughnut without licking your lips. One of the highlights of our day was a challenge that sounded simple… until we tried it.
It’s the kind of game that instantly makes you grin, because your brain says, “Yes, obviously,” and then reality kicks in. Cue lots of concentration, lots of giggles, and plenty of “I was so close!” moments. It didn’t matter who “won.” What mattered was the shared laughter, the light-hearted competition, and the way it got everyone talking.
There’s something deeply comforting about silliness, the wholesome kind that reminds us we don’t have to take everything seriously. Especially in winter, when routines can feel repetitive and days can blur into one another, playful moments help us feel more awake, more connected, and more alive.
Then came another favourite; Rattle Battles. If you’ve never seen a room full of people absolutely committed to a silly game, you’re missing out. It was hilarious, energetic, and unexpectedly competitive, the best kind of fun, where everyone gets caught up in the moment.
What we loved most was how engaging it was. Activities like this aren’t just “something to do.” They encourage participation, spark conversation, and create a shared memory that lasts beyond the afternoon itself. Later on, people were still chatting about who had the best technique, who surprised everyone, and which moment made them laugh the hardest.
And that’s a big part of what makes community life special: the way small moments become stories.
And then we introduced something completely unique; a human fruit machine. It was colourful, imaginative, and just the right amount of ridiculous. The “prizes” were delicious pieces of fresh fruit, crisp apples, sweet bananas, and other juicy treats that felt like a little taste of sunshine in the middle of winter.
In a season where comfort food often takes centre stage, there was something really uplifting about choosing a prize that was bright, fresh, and energising. It was playful and practical at the same time, a reminder that looking after ourselves can be enjoyable, not restrictive.
And watching everyone get involved cheering, laughing, and celebrating each “spin” made it one of those Mountside moments we’ll remember for a long time.
It’s easy to think of fun days as “extras,” but at Mountside we see them as meaningful. Because joy isn’t just a nice feeling it’s an important part of wellbeing.
Shared laughter can ease tension.
Music can lift a mood.
Games can spark connection.
A warm room full of people can make winter feel less long.
And perhaps most importantly, days like Blue Monday are a chance to practice a mindset we want to carry all year:
- We don’t have to accept a negative label for the day.
- We can choose what we focus on.
- We can appreciate what’s good, even when the season feels hard.
This doesn’t mean ignoring difficult feelings. It means balancing them with the things that support us, kindness, companionship, humour, and the comfort of being part of something.
Winter can invite us to slow down, and there’s something gentle about that. At Mountside, we find joy in the small, everyday things:
- the smell of a warm drink,
- familiar songs playing in the background,
- a shared joke that becomes an ongoing “in” joke,
- a friendly competition that brings out someone’s playful side,
- a moment of eye contact that says, “I’m glad you’re here.”
These are the small things that make life feel rich, and in a care home setting, they matter deeply. They create routine, comfort, identity, and belonging. They help a day feel like a day worth remembering.
We’re realistic, winter can be a challenge. It can feel like a waiting season. But winter also has its own beauty, the crispness in the air, the cosy indoors, the comfort of warm lighting and familiar spaces. It’s a time that invites reflection, rest, and togetherness.
There’s something hopeful about this part of the year. Even if the trees are bare, we know what comes next. And hope doesn’t always arrive as a big feeling sometimes it arrives as small moments stacked together until you realise you’re smiling more than you were.
If Blue Monday taught us anything, it’s this: community changes everything.
When you’re surrounded by people who make you laugh, who invite you in, who notice if you’re quiet, who celebrate the small wins it’s easier to feel lighter. It’s easier to shake off the heaviness. It’s easier to find a reason to join in.
At Mountside, we’re proud of the spirit that runs through our home, the warmth, the humour, the genuine care, and the way people look out for one another. It’s not something you can manufacture. It’s something that grows through everyday kindness, shared routines, and moments that remind us we’re all part of the same team.
Our takeaway: turn the day into what you need
We can’t always choose the season we’re in, but we can often choose how we meet it.
At Mountside Care Home, we’ll keep choosing warmth, joy, and connection, one small moment at a time.
