At The Old Rectory Care Home, we love discovering (or rediscovering!) games that spark fun, focus, and friendly competition—and this week, we went wonderfully old-school with a round of bagatelle!
For those unfamiliar, bagatelle is a historic tabletop game dating back to the 18th century, originally developed in France. A precursor to the modern pinball machine, it quickly became a pub favourite here in Britain, where players aim to flick small balls up the board, hoping to land them in high-scoring pockets.
Our tabletop version brought out everyone’s inner competitor, as residents took turns launching the balls, testing their aim, and celebrating every lucky shot. The hope of a high score had us all smiling, cheering each other on, and enjoying a few light-hearted rivalries along the way!
Aside from the laughter, games like bagatelle offer fantastic benefits:
🎯 Cognitive stimulation – encouraging focus, hand-eye coordination, and strategy.
🗣️ Social interaction – sparking conversation and connection through shared play.
💭 Memory recall – evoking fond memories of pubs, family games, and times gone by.
💪 Fine motor skills – supporting physical engagement in a fun and low-pressure way.
In a world of modern tech and touchscreens, there’s something wonderfully refreshing about going retro. Our residents enjoyed stepping back in time with this timeless game—and we’re already lining up more vintage classics for our next games afternoon!
Who knew a few wooden balls and a sloped board could bring so much joy? Here’s to high scores, good company, and the charm of traditional games!
