This initiative focuses on sunflower seeds, chosen for their ease of growth and the spectacular blooms they produce, allowing residents to nurture and witness the development of huge, vibrant flower heads by summer.

The project was introduced as a way to ensure that all residents, especially those who are less mobile, have the opportunity to participate in gardening activities. "We wanted to bring the benefits and beauty of gardening to everyone here at Gabriel Court, not just those who can make it outside," explained Gemma Activities Coordinator "Sunflowers are perfect because they grow quite easily and have such a delightful impact with their large, bright flowers."

Staff members assisted residents in planting the seeds, explaining the process and the care required to nurture them to full bloom. The activity was designed to be accessible, with table-top gardening setups that are easy to reach and manage.

The care home plans to track the progress of the sunflowers as they grow, with residents taking turns to water them and check their development. This ongoing engagement with the plants is expected to provide continuous activity and interest, as well as a topic for social interaction among residents.

Gabriel Court Care Home's indoor gardening project not only adapts to the physical capabilities of its residents but also enriches their daily lives by connecting them with nature and each other.
