Fairways Care home Fulfil Resident’s Dream

Fairways Care home Fulfil Resident’s Dream with Flight Experience

Fairways Care Home Kent has collaborated with a flight experience charity to fulfil one of its resident’s long time wishes — with an immersive simulation experience transporting the resident back to the skies.

96-year-old Roy Jackson from Fairways Care Home, in New Romney, was gifted an Aerobility flight simulation experience, as part of the home’s ongoing commitment to providing tailored care and supporting the independence of its residents.

Passionate about flying since his first flight from Romford in 1936, Roy would spend his time spotting planes he saw overhead during the war and continued this throughout the rest of his life.

The former bank clerk expressed his desire to fly again but always thought his mobility, and being wheelchair bound, would prevent him from doing so. Keen to fulfil his wish, staff from Fairways home explored some options before coming across Aerobility, who aim to change lives by providing the disabled community access to the magic and wonder of flight.

Alison Yarnley, Registered Manager at Fairways Care Home, said: “We recognise that every resident has a unique life story and a set of dreams that deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.  The ripple effect of such experiences is felt throughout our home. It creates a great sense of hope and endless possibility. The pure joy radiating from Roy has reminded us all of the profound impact we can have on the lives entrusted to our care.”

The flying session was meticulously planned to ensure an immersive and joyful experience for Roy. As he took the controls he was transported into the cockpit of a plane, with the horizon stretching out before him and the controls at his fingertips. The virtual skies welcomed him, and for those precious moments, Roy was no longer in the confines of the care home but soaring high above the clouds, fulfilling his lifelong dream.

Fairways strives to offer the best in care for its residents in a warm, comfortable, and relaxed environment. Its focus on accessibility, compassion, and independence, helps residents to blossom and grow under its care.
